POW JAPAN, an environmental organization working to "protect winter" from the climate crisis, has released the "Sustainable Resort Handbook" for green ski resorts!

When POW JAPAN spoke to ski resorts around the country, the common response was, "We feel a sense of crisis about global warming, and we want to do something. But we don't know where to start. We want you to show us concrete initiatives."

Until now, there has been no comprehensive summary of decarbonization and sustainability efforts at ski resorts, so this time POW JAPAN has created a report consisting of specialists in each field.SRA's Advisory TeamWith the cooperation of many people, including ski resorts that are already taking the lead in this area, and by taking inspiration from initiatives in other industries, we have produced a handbook specifically focused on decarbonization and sustainability at ski resorts.

The handbook consists of an action list to support the "first step" and introduces leading examples of snow resorts both in Japan and abroad.

We hope that this handbook will serve as a catalyst for ski resorts around the country to continue to build on and develop their initiatives, which will then have an impact on local governments and related companies near the ski resorts, the entire snow industry, and other industries.

Handbook Overview
・As examples of cutting-edge initiatives at snow resorts and snow towns both in Japan and overseas, we focus on Europe, North America, and Nozawa Onsen Village and introduce them in interview articles.

-Introduces 12 actions focused on zero carbon and sustainability in snow resort management. A comprehensive list of actions ranging from initiatives related to ski resort management to initiatives involving guests and local communities, and lobbying for climate change policies.

The handbooks distributed to member ski resorts were printed by Okawa Printing Co., Ltd., a company committed to environmentally friendly printing, using FSC®-certified paper, non-VOC (0% petroleum-based solvent) inks, and 100% renewable energy.

This handbook is intended to be read by ski resorts, skiers, snowboarders, and other industries nationwide, and is available in PDF format atSustainable Resorts Alliance (SRA)" is available for free.

About the Sustainable Resorts Alliance (SRA)

The Sustainable Resort Alliance (SRA) is a coalition of ski resorts and skiers working together to make ski resorts across Japan zero carbon and sustainable.

The new SRA logo has been completed. The SRA initial "S" surrounded by snowflakes represents the snow we love, and represents a "hand," which represents protecting what is important with our own hands, as well as cooperation and unity.

A signature-based campaign (running from December 2023 to March 12) aimed at skiers and snowboarders nationwide to support the shift to zero-carbon, sustainable ski resorts was also conducted online, at outdoor brand stores, and at snow events, collecting 2024 signatures nationwide. POW JAPAN shared the results with ski resorts nationwide, and nine new ski resorts* joined, bringing the total to 3 ski resorts nationwide.
