Mario Hainzl from “The Old, the Young & the Sea” Interview

Mario is from Austria and learned to ski from his father, where he started snowboarding.
This time, SBN was impressed with how he built his current lifestyle from the snowboarding lifestyle, and his high level of photography skills, and in fact influenced the way he shoots snowboarding as an SBN. I've always wanted to hear about my insistence on shooting.
Mario Hainzl. That the next lifestyle connected from snowboarding is surf movie production.

Their next year's release, "The Old, the Young & the Sea," is a European documentary film that follows from a slightly different perspective.

Rather than featuring only professional surfers, the film crew also focuses on many locals, ordinary people, environmental activists and scientists to depict the details clearly.
Currently they are moving around day and night for the June 2013 Movie release.

Mario Hainzl talks about snowboarding and surfing, the technical details and thoughts behind this project, and what they plan to do in Japan in the future.

A lifestyle beyond that connected from snowboarding.
It may contain an important message for those who like snowboarding.

SBN Japaho Interview --Doppelbild Surf + Snowboard
Surfers and Snowboarders: There's a lot in common here, and there's a strong attraction that connects people with nature.

Q. First of all, what do you think about Sowboarding?
Some say snowboarding and surfing are similar, while others say they aren't.

Interestingly, our project originates from Austria, but from a country in the center of Europe with a high altitude inland.

When everyone thinks of Austria, they never think of surf, and the first thing they envision is Mozart, Vienna, Opernball or the mountains.

In fact, everyone on this product team was snowboarding before they started surfing.
My dad taught me skiing when I was XNUMX and it turned into snowboarding when I was XNUMX.

Snowboarding has also inspired a lot of people to start side-riding sports, which I think has now helped many of them broaden their horizons and surf.

I believe there are many similarities between snowboarding and surfing.
There is also a very important relationship of doing it in nature, from the obvious of similar body movements.

Especially the weather. It's the same as waiting for good weather, going far away by the time you get there, and making you want to go.

Waiting for good conditions means that you have to accept snowboarding and surfing inevitably.
But I think there's something in these two sports that makes us feel relaxed.
So even if the weather is bad for a while, you don't feel crazy and unpleasant, you can imagine the best conditions and wait happily.

Apart from that, when you arrive and the conditions are great, you may be struck by the joy of bursting.
It's great to be able to share the fun of hiking snowy mountains and heading to the beach with your friends.
With that in mind, I feel that snowboarding and surfing are incredibly valuable.
Even if I could take off on my own in a powder fast track or great waves where no one was slipping.

When you think about it, what is completely different from other sports is that instead of competing with someone else to enjoy winning or losing like soccer, you can share the place and time with someone and enjoy it, and no one loses. I think that's what it means.

SBN Japaho Interview --Checking Surf
Waiting, searching, exploring, hanging out with friends: Snowboarding and surf culture is rooted here

We're just back in Austria and the surfing season is over and we're about to start working on the movie again, but if we're lucky enough to get stuck, we can glide through the powder!

Q. I was impressed with your project and I think each photo is wonderful.
Can you tell us what triggered this start and what you care about when shooting?

First of all, there was sociology in our background.
I and Andreas Jaritz are working on this project, and I used to study media communication in Austria, Spain, Chile and Senegal.
After spending a long time pursuing cultural sensibilities that cannot be learned by reading a book alone, it is not as magnificent as a normal movie, but how ordinary people enjoy the moment, I wanted to express the reality of how I've been living a life, focusing on the locals who make surfing a part of their lives.

SBN Japaho Interview --From Young to Old
From young to old: The Old, the Young & the Sea story has all generations

And I realized that such a movie wasn't in Europe, and as I proceeded with the plan, I was able to get the support of big partners like the Surfrider Foundation in Europe and brands like Patagonia and Reef.

And from the spring of XNUMX, I started working with two Volkswagen vans to shoot.
Our approach is professional riders, activists, scientists and the general public, and meeting them has been a great experience.

SBN Japaho Interview --Doppelbild Capsula und Harmloso
Differences: Spanish rock band Capsula is on the road to world famous, Martin on the right is on the road to self-discovery

We're pretty particular about photography, too.
When taking portraits, she wants to harmonize them with the nature that surrounds them.
We want to introduce some of the most representative people in the community, but I want the story behind them to portray them.
This is the same when shooting video.

First of all, you can get to know them well, get to know them, spend time together and take relaxing, natural pictures.
Of course I don't say that when I take pictures of them.
It is very important for us to take good relaxing pictures.
Therefore, during a photo session, it is important for us to relax and create an atmosphere of the place.

SBN Japaho Interview --Doppelbild Viking + Martha
Life models: Christian from Sweden lives on a road trip with his family. Marta on the right goes to lunch. Both get to know each other at the same surf point.

Of our photographerStefan LeitnerFirst of all, I think it's easy to carry.
Most of the shooting uses a Nikon D700, AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED lens so that the subject looks very realistic.

I try to make them have the image of being "touchable" in the picture.

I want to make the color of the sky look rich and at the same time shine light on the subject, so I try to match the natural light with the light diffusion diffuser with two Elinchroms on the Elinchrom Ranger Power Unit.
Our photo images are on our website,www.oldyoungsea.comIf you look at, you'll know right away!

Q. Do you have a final message for Japanese people?

For me, who has never been to Japan, it's a place I really admire, and it's known for its wonderful terrain, the best powder in the world, and a lot of surfing points.

Of course we have a lot of different things from Austrian culture, but I think we can get along quickly by enjoying something together.

I wish there was more interaction between Japanese and Austrian snowboarders and surfers.
If you fly to Austria, France, Spain and Portugal will soon be there, and I'll show you how to enjoy snowboarding and surfing with the locals on a trip in a camping van in Europe!

SBN Japaho Interview --Go Explore (1)
Just the road in front of you: European surfers often travel south for a few weeks in search of surf. Let's travel!

Also, I definitely want to do "The Old, the Young & The Sea" made in Europe in Japan.

From north to south, from the countryside to the city, from the snowy mountains to the beach. And the problems that Japan is facing after the Fukushima catastrophe and the evening Japanese people who are confronting them.I think there's a lot to talk about.

I want to make a movie that combines snowboarding, surfing, lifestyle culture and Japanese beauty.
I can't wait to visit Japan, really.
If anyone has read this interview and is interested in it, I'd love to hear from you.
I would be very happy if I could make a beautiful real lifestyle documentary in Japan and interact with Europe and Japan in the future.
