FREERUN “THE PROLOGUE” _episode-1

FREERUN started in 1999 with friends who gathered to create a new magazine in order to overcome the barriers of work that had been done in specialized magazines. The road was much steeper than I expected, but FREE RUN still doesn't stop as rival magazines disappear one by one. The core of FREE RUN that hasn't changed after 17 years. It's not a big deal, but let me introduce a little story at the time of the first issue. The first part of the two-part series is about "Direction Aimed at the First Issue-Main Project SNOWBOARDER'S LIFE".The answer to the question is Takayuki Sugiura, the first editor-in-chief.

Q. "Freerun" started in 4 as the 4th specialized magazine (at that time, SNOWSTYLE, SNOWing, TRANSWORLD, the 1999th existing magazine). What kind of magazine did you think about making at that time?

Broadly speaking, it is a snowboard magazine that combines the sports and play aspects of snowboarding. However, I didn't really care about the contents of other magazines, and I often talked about the originality in the editorial department. From the way the photos are shown to the way the letters are written, I want to be particular about it.Ordinary projects are NG.It is NG where you can usually go to domestic and overseas interviews.I think about the readers, but first of all, it was important to have a project that the editorial department would find fun.Even if it seems to be clearly accepted by readers, I dared to reject projects that are published in other magazines.I also decided to post the product introduction after interviewing the manufacturer.
With that in mind, the planning of the first issue was made with a strong commitment, conscious of the fact that it will be a very important issue in showing the direction of Freerun in the future. Also, it is the achievement of AD (art director) etsu at that time that is indispensable when talking about the first issue of Freerun.I think she decided the direction of the design of Freerun's cover and magazine, and was able to establish the image of the magazine to readers and manufacturers.

Q. What kind of event was "TOYOTA BIG AIR" introduced in the opening project?

At this time, big air conditioner tests were held all over the world. "AIR & STYLE" in Innsbruck, Australia, which started in 1994, is the head family, and "TOYOTA BIG AIR" in Japan has been in Hokkaido and Sapporo since 97.In the summer of the same year, "J PHONE AIR MAKE" was held at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, and in the fall of 98, "AIR RIDERS" was held in Nagoya.Unlike the competition-oriented competitions that have been held so far, the contests and events are splendid, such as fireworks, night shops lined up, good music and light MC performances, and live concerts of popular artists. The new mixed SNOW event movement has begun to build. There are a total of 5 participants, 11 Japanese and 16 overseas players. The tricks have evolved a lot, high, far and complex, and the style has been sought after.Even if you are not very interested in snowboarding, who is this "TOYOTA BIG AIR"? It was a contest that everyone knew.

I remember it was cold anyway. When I read the article again, it was -12 degrees at the time of this interview.A player jumps out from the top of the TOYOTA sign on the far left, and the front yagura is a judge's seat. The players land in front of the 1 spectators on the far right. The whole venue was lively and enthusiastic.

Before the contest was held, I was asked to stand in a special starting position that can be seen at the top, but I was scared because of the height and shaking. And, as I still remember clearly, I felt a warrior trembling when I thought about the players who jumped out from here toward a large number of spectators and showed off their skills.

I couldn't help but feel the scale and momentum of this contest when I thought about how many pipes were used to set up the venue, such as looking at the venue from the side.
